I’ve been painting with acrylics since 1972 and I’ve adapted my methods and techniques over the years to a practical system which accomplishes my goals. When it comes to subject matter, I never feel lacking -- as long as there’s light, there’s something to tell about! A quote from St. Paul inspires and serves as a framework for my artistic expression:
“Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things.”
Philippians 4:8
If it makes me think, or wonder, or even -- smile, when the light is compelling, I first capture the idea using my camera. My creative process continues in my studio where everything I need to create is close at hand. I find that painting outdoors, en plein air, isn't very practical with quick-drying acrylics. My method of painting involves many layers of washes and glazes and it's better accomplished indoors. I've spent most of 2009 exploring and exploiting my familiar painting medium. Now, my work has an ecclectic look -- from watercolor techniques to heavy impasto applications -- the creative possibilities are vast with acrylics. Depending on what I have to tell, the paint application sets the tone.
Every time I paint, I feel like I've stepped onto a stage and someone has handed me a microphone. What will I say? I don't know what comes next, but I pray, "Lord, help me me to say what's true."
